Abstract

Four chitosan-metal complexes were prepared from low molecular weight chitosan with metals including Ag(I), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Hg(II) and were characterized by FT-IR. In vitro antimicrobial activities of the complexes were evaluated against the plant pathogenic bacteria of crown gall Agrobacterium tumefaciens and soft mold Erwinia carotovora and fungi of
leaf spots and blights Alternaria alternata, grey mold Botrytis cinerea, root rot Fusarium oxysporum and damping off Pythium debaryanum. The complexes enhanced the antibacterial activity and chitosan-Hg and chitosan-Ag were
the most active compounds, both of which had MIC of 15 and 30 mg/L against E. carotovora, respectively and 20 and 45 mg/L against A. tumefaciens, respectively. In addition, chitoan-metal complexes showed stronger antifungal activities (EC50 ranged from 14.50 to 869.49 mg/L) than the chitosan itself (higher than 2000 mg/L). Among the complexes,
chitosan-Ag and chitosan-Hg exerted significantly prominent antifungal activity.
